Visit by the Nogentais

The Nogentais once again visited Beverley during the weekend of 28th April with a varied programme of events covering most of East Yorkshire.

Despite the not-so-nice weather a good time seemed to be had by all. A full report will be published soon, but in the meantime here's the group photo on the final morning.

Lempicka Café was once again full to bursting for our second wine tasting event.

This year it was all about grape and country identification with a light hearted quiz, a tutored tasting expertly led by Carrie Smith, followed by generous portions.

A buffet and fondue provided by Nancy helped to soak up the alcohol.

Another fantastic social night which was well supported by non members.

27th October saw the visit to Beverley of 15 Nogentais, slightly down on previous years due to the closeness of their annual visit to London.

Highlights of the visit were the Michaelmas Fair at Burton Agnes and the Blues Festival at various places around Beverley, followed on Sunday by a guided tour of Hull's historic old town with Paul Schofield from the City of Culture team.

Mystery Antiques Night

The Mystery Antiques Night was all about guessing the purpose of the antique, fittingly held in one of the oldest pubs in Olde Beverley, The Monks Walk.

A light hearted and amusing night in good company and delicious food. Derek, our host had certainly dug up some intriguing objects, and even found some older than the people attending. Each object was passed around with a multiple choice of 4 options as to what might have been their original purpose. This led to some interesting discussions around the tables. So interesting in fact that cameras were forgotten and alas we have no pictures.

You will have to use your imagination, or alternatively sign up for the next event, which judging by the feedback, is bound to be repeated.

Lempicka Café was packed to the rafters for our first wine tasting event.

Titled "The Other France", this was a journey through the lesser known wine areas of France led by Jim Godfrey, local wine "expert" and raconteur.

Avoiding the obvious areas like Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy etc., Jim gave a very entertaining and informative talk on areas initimately known by him and which he considers the wines to be good value for money and locally available but which do not appear on supermarket shelves.

Most of the wines were supplied by Roberts and Speight on Norwood.

Accompanied by an excellent buffet supplied by Nancy and her team to match each wine, this was a great evening which I'm sure we will be eager to repeat.

Another successul race night at the Minster Rooms raised around £500 (exact figure not available at time of writing), with the Red Arrows picture kindly donated by David raising £38.

Excellent food and wine (on our table anyway) and by the sound of it, on others also.

Enormous thanks to Phil for organising and to Keith for hosting and also for his topical and very funny jokes, which unfortunately can't be repeated in print for litigation reasons.

Pentanque "competition"

As part of the Society's wish that within the Association individual clubs should try to establish further links with similar clubs in Nogent, BRANDESBURTON PÉTANQUE CLUB were invited by NOGENT PETANQUE CLUB to take part in an invitation match at Nogent. There appeared to be more drinking than petanque-ing. See what you think in Antonio's report below:

"Members BOB MITCHELL and GEOFF GALLIFANT with wives PAT and HELEN were joined by TONI MÜNDEL. On arrival on the Saturday we were met by DOMINIQUE (chair) PETIT and her husband ALAIN, representing the ASSOCIATION NOGENT BEVERLEY at the restaurant SESON overlooking the PARC HERBERT where the competition was to take place on the Sunday. They entertained us to a delicious meal and explained the following day's proceedings.

Despite the morning's downpour, we examined the playing area which was marked out with bales of hay and we finally understood the previous evening's comment that play would be "between the tractors and the chickens"! All around a farmer's market was taking place and indeed on one side were toy tractors for children and coops full of geese, rabbits etc.on the other. After meeting the Mayor and his lady deputy we were invited for "drinks" amongst other new arrivals to the town. After a brief lunch we were introduced to members of the Nogent club and each one paired up with one of their players for 3 afternoon games. All a lighthearted affair with kids cycling through and many a forage amongst the undergrowth for errant shots. In between games we were invited, indeed encouraged to have more "drinks" in their clubhouse, a kind of rock cave. Although our ladies were a little apprehensive they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and HELEN with her partner scooped the biggest cup. We all received some sort of trophy, presented by their chair ANNE TREVOIZON, and a plate for our clubhouse; we too handed one over to them. More drinks followed and much photography and we parted promising to let them have our playing schedule for 2017 for a return drink, sorry, I mean match."

Another successful tombola in Beverley Market with a total of around £140 after costs raised.

Leo, a guide dog currently holidaying with us while his owner was attending a wedding was a crowd puller once we promised to take the flags off him.

The top prizes of a family day out to Pleasure Island and afternoon tea at Lempickas were won. Two lucky grand-parents now have to choose which of their grand children they will take to the joys of Cleethorpes

Despite the very British weather and traffic jams the Nogentais arrived in Beverley to enjoy a well deserved beer in Wednesday Market just in time for the cycle race.

Bridlington sea food market, Flamborough, the Arctic Corsair, walks round the Westwood, and the open gardens at Beverley were trips enjoyed by many on this sometimes soggy weekend culminating in a farwell buffet at The Travellers Rest whilst hiding from the France vs Portugal Euros final result.

The French love a good market and in Beverley we have one of the best. No wonder they always want to come at Christmas time. Up early to catch the parade!

Nogent has a long railway history and many locals are employed by SNCF - the French part nationalised railway. A visit to the railway museum at York was therefore a must for many. Bracing Bridlington provided an alernative.

Burton Agnes Hall on Sunday was also a great hit, wowed by both the Hall and the seasonal decorations, the Nogentais think that Beverley is the perfect place at Christmas.

Highlight of the visit was a day trip to Paul Lerrede, a family run independant champagne producer close to Nogent.

This lovely informal visit gave us a film, tour round the vinyards, vats, chais and production line culminating in a very long lunch, tasting every different type of champagne and ratafia that Paul and his family make.

Very generous and a great day out.

The following day we had a choice of a 5 or 10kms walk to clear our heads followed by a BBQ in the forest French style.
